The second life of the old wardrobe

Do not rush to throw away old furniture. If desired, it can be restored, extending life in a new look. The boring old wardrobe is easily transformed into an author's creative piece of furniture. For this, modern paints, varnishes, self-adhesive wallpapers, pens, linings that change the appearance of the furniture are used. Materials are selected depending on the chosen design project. Restoration does not require significant financial and physical costs.

The old wardrobe will not have to be taken anywhere; all work can be done at its location. The advantage is the ability to correct or correct the project in the process of work at its discretion. To restore the old chiffonier, you can use one of 4 main styles:

  1. Art Deco - is characterized by the presence of geometric patterns in bright colors.
  2. Decoupage - style using pasted figures, patterns (napkins with colored patterns), followed by fixing them with varnish. Found wide application for wooden surfaces.
  3. Self-adhesive films and wallpapers - covering of wooden surfaces cut using a stencil of patterns from wallpaper or film.
  4. Craquelure - creates an imitation of antiquity on wooden surfaces using craquelure, adding beauty to the cracks on the furniture.

Materials and Tools

Tools needed for work are available in every home. In the absence of any of them can be purchased at the tool store.

For work you will need:

  • Sander;
  • paint brushes and rollers;
  • set of screwdrivers;
  • spatulas.

Important! For uniform coloring, it is recommended to use a spray gun, in its absence - velor rollers.

Depending on the chosen restoration method, materials may be needed:

  • sandpaper;
  • furniture fittings;
  • fasteners;
  • furniture wax;
  • solvent;
  • primer;
  • insecticide;
  • putty;
  • stain;
  • acrylic varnish of the selected tone;
  • masking tape;
  • stencil;
  • self-adhesive wallpaper or film;
  • PVA glue;
  • acrylic paint.

Materials can be purchased at any construction supermarket. The list may be supplemented with rarely used materials due to the high cost or the specifics of the work. For example, expensive photo printing made in specialized companies, or decorative plaster, requiring the ability to work with it.

Step-by-step instruction

The stages of restoration will differ depending on the chosen style. Step-by-step instructions for updating an old wooden two-door wardrobe using a self-adhesive film pattern:

  1. Remove the wardrobe with screwdrivers.
  2. Replace the worn out hardware and fittings.
  3. Clean all components from dirt.
  4. Degrease wood surfaces.
  5. Remove old varnish or paint.
  6. Sand the surface.
  7. Leave for 6-8 hours to dry completely.
  8. Treat wood surfaces with insecticide.
  9. Seal cracks with putty or furniture wax, depending on their size.
  10. Apply 2 coats of primer with intermediate drying to the surface to be painted.
  11. Check surface for smoothness.
  12. Paint with selected acrylic paint in 2 layers with intermediate drying.
  13. Leave on for 24 hours to dry completely.
  14. Cut a geometric pattern using self-adhesive wallpaper or film.
  15. Glue symmetrically to both doors of the chiffonier.
  16. Apply a transparent acrylic matte varnish in 2 layers.
  17. Leave to dry completely for 24 hours.
  18. Secure new door handles.

After completing all the work, the old wardrobe gets a second life with a new look.
